This explains what the YouTube to Kindle browser extension collects, why, and who it is shared with. It is written to match what the software actually does.
What is collected
- Your Send to Kindle address. You type it into the extension. It is stored on your device and sent to our server, which uses it to deliver your document and to count how many free conversions you have used.
- Video transcripts and details. When you convert a video, its transcript, title, channel, URL and length are sent to our server to be turned into an e-book.
- A record of each conversion. We store which video you converted and when, so the free allowance can be enforced.
- An installation identifier. A random value generated by the extension, used to limit abuse. It is not linked to your identity.
- Your Google email address — subscribers only. Requested only if you choose to subscribe, so your subscription can be recognised on another browser. Free users are never asked to sign in.
- Subscription status. If you subscribe, we store identifiers issued by Stripe and whether your subscription is active. We never see or store your card details.
- Failure reports. If the extension cannot read a video's transcript at all, it reports the video's ID and the technical reason each attempt failed. This is how we learn that YouTube has changed something and the extension is broken. It is sent only on failure, never on success, and contains nothing about you.
- Server logs. Routine request logs, which include IP addresses, are kept for a short period for reliability and abuse prevention.
What is not collected
We do not collect your browsing history. The only pages recorded are the specific YouTube videos you choose to convert. We do not collect passwords, card numbers, or location beyond the IP address in server logs, and we do not track your activity across websites.
Who it is shared with
- Anthropic — transcripts are processed by Claude to produce the readable document.
- Google Firebase — stores accounts and conversion records.
- Stripe — handles subscription payments. Card details go directly to Stripe and never reach us.
- Amazon — the finished file is emailed to the Send to Kindle address you provide.
- Our email provider and host — used to send the document and run the service.
We do not sell your data, transfer it for advertising, or use it for credit or lending decisions.
How long it is kept
Conversion records are retained for as long as the free allowance applies to your address, since removing them would reset that allowance. Subscriber account details are kept while the subscription is active and for as long as needed for billing records. Transcripts are cached temporarily to avoid reprocessing the same video, and the finished document is not stored after it has been emailed.
Your choices
Data stored on your device can be removed by uninstalling the extension. To request deletion of your account or conversion records, or to ask what is held about you, email read@youtubetokindle.com.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top will be updated.
